Ни капли слащавости нет в этом нежном и элегичном фильме, который Николас Рей, пессимист поневоле, как и картину Стучись в любую дверь, Knock on Any Door, где герой Джона Дерека оказывался на электрическом стуле, снова завершает очень мрачной развязкой. Но параллельно с тем, как трагически обрываются его взаимоотношения с юношей, персонаж Кэгни, немолодой человек в конце длинного пути, усеянного бедами и разочарованиями, находит дорогу к любви и покою. Эта двойная и противоречивая сюжетная линия вызывает в повествовании глубокий надлом.
